Patan's Patola are not ordinary sarees. They are one of kind in these excellence & they top handicraft in the entire world.

At the time when Machines were not invented the Salvi Families used to hand make these patolas and gave it its Quality & excellence with their Craft. Which is not possible even 16 days offer the inventions of machines. Even today Salvi family have continued making these crafted patolas & people from worldwide come to see this excellent craft. These Craft of making patolas have earned a reputed name for patan & patnis are very proud of this.

What is a Patola?

In other Clothes, the cloth is first made by powerlooms and then they are printed & coloured as per the design. While in patola, each & every thread is individually coloured & Pat to gather to obtain its beautiful design. This gives the patola its wearing beauty. It required lot of patience & hard work. These horizontal of vertical threads (warm-wept) (tana-vana). While putting to gather brings out its lovely design.

The Designs which are running along from King Kumar pal time which have never become out dated will be available with various colours & designs. The one Place for the purchase of such Patolas.

Silk, Colour & Jari used in a Patola:

Patola are made from silk China, Korea & Brazil breed. These threads are of two types. Six threaded & eight threaded. Six threaded & eight threaded are joining to gather and made into one Single silk thread. This King of a natural production is very raise due to which it becomes expensive. Even today the silk threads are imported from China. But now these types of silk threads are available in Bangalore. The colours which were used were made from natured resources & plants. So, they are called vegetable colours. But now a day's chemical colours and used in which Napkhol, Indigo & Wait are used. The method of making vegetable colours in not available anywhere. To make glitter thread (jari) gold is coated on silk threads & till date these to make gold coated threads & till date these coated threads are used. This 800 year old method is still used to make the traditional Patola in Patan. But now due to insufficient time only 3 families of Salvi's are making this traditional craft of Patola.

A Patolas Size:

A Patola in 5.5 m. long & 4 foot wide. The colour & designs are on both the sides of a patola which are one of a kind. And such patolas are made in patan only.

Weaving Method:

After colouring & designing the threads are the taken for weaving. One craft man stands on the loom & works with 3 looms. Two people work on the hand loom during weaving. They match the design on the both sides during weaving. After a part of weaving is finished they give it its finishing touch. Then the Patola remains subject of study due to this form of weaving.

Designs of a Patola:

Pare silk threads are made & coloured offer which King Kumar Pal designs the patola. These designs are still alive in today's Patolas. The designs are chosen from the Raja's collection of things in his palace. These designs which are 800 to 900 years old never go out of fashion in a patola. Narikunjar, Navratna , Voharagaji (Manek Chock), Chabbri bath, Chandabhati, Patan Bhatt, Laheriya, Taraliya, Fulbhatt, Kesar Chandan etc. are the designs in a patola. These designs are made with perfect calculation & hard work. Even a smallest mistake will leave the design unfinished.

Patola History:

There is a belief in patolas that King Kumar Pal ruled patan in 1143 Ad. After King Sid raj Jay Singh. King Kumar Pal was following Jainism with the guidance of kalikal sarvgagna hemchandracharya & used to get to the temple for his daily worship wearing this patola.

Once when the king was worshiping a person from Mungipattan told him that this patola is from Mungipattan & our king use the patolas & then sends it to other. When this is not right. You cannot wear used clothes while worshiping. They have to be ensured. So the king Kumar Pal called upon all the 700 craft man families of Mungipattan to came & settle down in patan where all these needs were fulfilled. From this time onwards patolas are made in patan only. Each day the king uses a new patola for his worship.
